I'm starting to think this Dunlop Germanium Fuzz Face, is just crap. I have no fuzz at 9 1/2 on the volume, it needs to be cranked to get any fuzz, otherwise it is just a slightly fattened clean tone. Other problem I have is my volume isn't reacting with this pedal. Also if I put the compressor in front of this fuzz, I get a lot of noise. The issue I am having is if I use no compressor, or boost, I don't have enough sustain. Too many harmonies at the input cause rubbish at the output.
Most fuzzes can only handle clean separate notes. The results contain a lot of ring modulation and ugly harmonics. It uses old chips meant for shaping digital signals. The Boss FZ2 does it, but if you are a carefull home or studio player you can use the Behringer SF300 which is a 1:1 copy for $25. That almost sounds like a synth producing a needle pwm soundwave. Only when the guitar has little sustain you might stretch that with the compressor before going into the fuzz but it's hard to keep it at a normal level and stretch the sustain too. Then there is filtering!Ĭutting lows and or highs changes the result dramatically. If the fuzz has a boost or drive, keep it down. Most fuzzes sound best when you do not drive them very hard. Most people buy these fuzzes and struggle to get them sounding exactly like they want. Find the sweet spot on your strat's volume control. Turn the fuzz almost all the way up, volume on the pedal too.
